Art and Design at Finstall First School

Rationale:

 Curriculum Intent:

At Finstall First School our Art and Design Curriculum covers the knowledge and skills required to meet the National Curriculum Programmes of Study for Key Stages 1 and 2.

Our intent is to promote creative thinking and help develop children’s capacity to express themselves imaginatively. We intend to develop children’s curiosity and interest in the world around them. To develop their capacity to imagine, to design and to develop artistic outcomes through visual, tactile and sensory experiences. Children will be able to record their observations and communicate their ideas in an imaginative and creative way. Our art and design curriculum intends to encourage our children to gain knowledge, understanding and an appreciation of the work of their peers, other artists, craftspeople, architects and designers throughout history and from different cultures. To be able to achieve this, children are given the opportunity to learn new skills, progressively, and become confident in the use of a wide range of tools, materials and techniques and to work with increasing skill and sensitivity.

Children have the opportunity to explore their ideas and record their experiences, as well as exploring the work of others and evaluate different creative ideas. Children will become confident and proficient in a variety of techniques including drawing, painting, sculpting, as well as other selected craft skills,

e.g. collage, printing, weaving and patterns. Children will also develop their knowledge of famous artists, designers, architects and craft makers.

We encourage our children to ask questions and demonstrate their skills in a variety of ways. Lessons will also offer the chance for children to develop their emotional expression through art and design to further enhance their personal, social and emotional development.

Curriculum Implementation:

There is an Art and Design curriculum map and a progression of skills which provide an overview of the knowledge, skills, artistic outcomes and artists that are covered in each year group. Our Medium Term Plans in Art and Design, have been developed to give the teachers and adults teaching art the confidence in and an understanding of the progression of skills and knowledge needed for children to develop and achieve specific outcomes. The Medium Term Plans identify the prior learning and next steps. They also identify knowledge and skills, resources and techniques, relevant links to other subjects, artists and/or cultural and historical significance.

Curriculum Impact:

Art and Design teaching and learning is enjoyed by teaching staff and children across Finstall First School. Teachers, Teaching Assistants and Support Staff have high expectations. Children’s art work is valued and displayed in classrooms and around the school, on the school website and on our Learning Platform, ‘Seesaw’. Staff and children are encouraged to use technical vocabulary accurately. Children are taught to know, apply and understand the knowledge, skills and processes in order the produce imaginative, creative and high quality outcomes. Children improve their enquiry skills and inquisitiveness about the world around them, and their impact through art and design on the world. Children will become more confident in analyzing their work and giving their opinion on their own and other works of art and design. Children show competences in improving their resilience and perseverance by continually evaluating and improving their work. Most children in school can speak confidently about their art and design work and their skills.
